What is Boxing

Boxing is a combat sport in which two people male or female, generally of similar weights fight each other with their fists. Boxing is supervised by a referee and is typically engaged in during a series of one to three minute intervals called rounds. They're three ways to win a boxing match. A win is achieved if the opponent is knocked out and un-able to get up before the referee counts to ten seconds. This is known as a knockout or " KO". Or if the opponent is deemed to injured to continue the fight it is known as a technical knockout or " TKO ". However, if there is no stoppage of the fight before an agreed number of rounds has been reached a winner is determined either by the referees decision or by judges score cards.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR

Sweats, shorts and a T-shirt, an aerobic-dance outfit or whatever keeps you comfortable and cool. We suggest you purchase a pair of boxing shoes to wear during your training sessions. We also suggest that you bring a few towels, and a few bottles of water so you are completely prepared for your class.

Will I Get Self Defense Skills From My Class

Most of our students use boxing skills in mixed martial bouts, but it does provide skills that both men and women can use to defend themselves from an attacker. Because Empire Training Center is a mixed martial arts school every class we offer has a slant on self-defense because we believe that everyone should be able to defend them self from an attacker should the need arise.

How Can I Maximize My Workout

As with any other exercise, if you want to improve your cardiovascular condition or trim an inch here and there, you'll have to do it regularly. Two or three sessions a week is probably the minimum, In between classes you should go for brisk walks, do some yoga to increase your flexibility, or simply take a day to rest. Do whatever lets you return to your Cardio Kickboxing class with renewed vigor. 

What should I expect from my Class

Be prepared to feel a little clumsy and lost at times, but don't get down on yourself for it. Even if your a highly conditioned runner or you've been doing step aerobics for years our moves will be new to your body. Your muscles need time to develop a memory of them, and your reactions as the instructor calls out what to do " jab, cross, hook, roundhouse" will be slow at first. By the second or third class, the awkwardness will start to dissipate and you'll be keeping up with the class.

Can I Hurt Myself

Yes, if your not careful, you could end up with a wrenched elbow, a sprained knee, a strained back, a pulled hamstring, or one of the injuries that commonly occur in these types of classes, such as a twisted ankle. So adopt a protective attitude, when you take your first class, tell yourself that your goal is to safely learn the techniques first before going 110%. We also strongly recommend If you can spare the time arrive a few minutes early and warm up by jogging or gently stretching your legs and shoulders. During the class, make sure that you stop the motion of each punch or kick before the joint is fully extended to ensure you have a safe and productive workout.

How Long Are Classes

At Empire Training Center our group Boxing classes normally last for around one hour. However if you choose to take private instruction you and your instructor will discuss your goals and asses where you are physically and decide how long your training session should be to attain your specific goals. But in most cases even with private instruction your class will be around one hour, unless you are training for an upcoming mma bout or some other type event that will require a great deal stamina.
