What is Mixed Martial Arts
Mixed Martial Arts or MMA as it is more commonly known is a full contact combat sport that allows a wide variety of traditional and non traditional techniques to be used in competition. The rules allow the use of striking and grappling techniques while standing and on the ground. Such competitions allow martial artists of different styles to compete together under rules that take into consideration the varying backgrounds of each different martial art. The roots of mixed martial arts can be traced back to various mixed style contests that took place throughout Europe, Japan and the Pacific Rim during the early 1900s.
Modern MMA competition emerged in 1993 with the founding of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, although professional MMA events had been held in Japan by Shooto as early as 1989 Originally organized with the intention of finding the most effective martial art for real un-armed combat situations, competitors were pitted against one another with minimal rules for the safety of participates. Later promoters adopted many additional rules aimed at increasing the safety of participants and to promote mainstream acceptance of the sport.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR
Sweats, shorts and a T-shirt or whatever keeps you comfortable and cool. You might also want to purchase a good pair of wrestling shoes to wear while training. Although most mixed martial artists prefer to train barefoot there are those that prefer the added safety of wearing shoes while training. If you do purchase a pair of shoes to train in please be sure to purchase wrestling shoes because their soles are the only type available that will not damage the mats the classes are held on.
Will I Get Self Defense Skills From My Class
Most of our students use the mma skills they learn in in our classes in mixed martial arts bouts, but it does provide skills that both men and women can use to defend themselves from an attacker. Because Empire Training Center is a mixed martial arts school every class we offer has a slant on self-defense because we believe that everyone should be able to defend them self or their family from an attacker should the need arise.

How Can I Maximize My Workout
As with any other contact sport, if you want to improve your mixed martial arts skills you'll have to do it regularly. Two or three sessions a week is probably the minimum, In between classes you should go for brisk walks, do some yoga to increase your flexibility, or simply take a day to rest. Do whatever lets you return to your next mixed martial arts class with renewed vigor.
What should I expect from my Class
Be prepared to feel a little clumsy and lost at times, but don't get down on yourself for it. Even if you have been doing mixed martial arts for years our moves will be new to your body. Your muscles need time to develop a memory of them, and your reactions as the instructor calls out what to do will be slow at first but don't worry. By the second or third class, the awkwardness will start to dissipate and you'll be keeping up with the class.

Can I Hurt Myself
Yes, if your not careful, you could end up with a wrenched elbow, a sprained knee, a strained back, a pulled hamstring, or one of the injuries that commonly occur in these types of classes, such as a twisted ankle. So adopt a protective attitude, when you take your first class, tell yourself that your goal is to safely learn the techniques first before you start giving it 100%. You can think about that later. If you can spare the time arrive a few minutes early and warm up by jogging or gently stretching your legs and shoulders. During the class, make sure that you stop the motion of each punch or kick before the joint is fully extended to ensure you have a safe and productive workout.
How Long Are Classes
At Empire Training Center our group Cardio Kickboxing classes normally last for around one hour. However if you choose to take private instruction you and your instructor will discuss your goals and asses where you are physically and decide how long your training session should be to attain your specific goals. But in most cases even with private instruction your class will be around one hour, unless you are training for an upcoming mma bout or some other type event that will require a great deal stamina.
