What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a martial art, combat sport and form of self-defense that focuses on grappling especially ground fighting. It was derived from the Japanese martial art of Kodokan Judo in the early 20th century which was itself then a recently developed fighting system based on multiple schools of Japanese jujutsu.

It promotes the principle that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend himself against a bigger, stronger assailant using leverage and proper technique; most notably, by applying joint-locks and chokeholds to defeat the other person. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu fighters can be trained for sport grappling tournaments and mixed martial arts competitions or self-defense. Sparring and live drills play a major role in the training, and a premium is placed on performance especially in competition.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR

We recommend you wear a ghee because it is the correct attire for this type of training however, you could wear shorts and a T-shirt or whatever keeps you comfortable and cool. We also suggest that you train in either wrestling shoes or barefoot because any other type of shoe will damage the training mats. It is also a very good idea to bring a few towels, and a bottle or two of water so you are completely prepared for your class.

Will I Get Self Defense Skills From My Class

All martial arts are forms of self-defense so the answer to this question is a definite yes. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu's main principle is based on the use of leverage to allow a smaller maybe weaker man to equalize the difference in size and strength of a much larger assailant. How Can I Maximize My Workout

As with any other form of martial arts, if you want to improve your skills, you'll have to train regularly. Two or three sessions a week is probably the minimum, In between classes you should go for brisk walks, do some yoga to increase your flexibility, or simply take a day to rest. Do whatever lets you return to your next Brazilian Jiu Jitsu class with renewed vigor.

What should I expect from my Class

Be prepared to feel a little clumsy or lost at times, but don't get down on yourself for it. Even if you have taken Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes at another school our moves will be new to your body. Your muscles need time to develop a memory of them, and your reactions might  be a little slow at first. But by the second or third class, the awkwardness will start to dissipate and you'll be keeping up with the class.

Can I Hurt Myself

Yes, if your not careful, you could end up with a wrenched elbow, a sprained knee, a strained back, a pulled hamstring, or one of the injuries that commonly occur in these types of classes, such as a twisted ankle. So adopt a protective attitude, when you take your first class, tell yourself that your goal is to safely learn the techniques first before you start set goals that are un-realistic like shedding five pounds or reshaping your hips. If you can spare the time you should always arrive a few minutes early and warm up by jogging or gently stretching your legs and shoulders. During the class, make sure that you stop the motion of each punch or kick before the joint is fully extended to ensure you have a safe and productive workout.

How Long Are Classes

At Empire Training Center our group Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes normally last for around one hour. However if you choose to take private instruction you and your instructor will discuss your goals and asses where you are physically and decide how long your training session should be to attain your specific goals. But in most cases even with private instruction your class will be around one hour, unless you are training for an upcoming mma bout or some other type event that will require you to have a great deal more stamina then the normal student requires for normal training sessions.
