Wrestling is an ancient form of martial art that uses grappling type techniques such as clinch fighting, throws, takedowns, joint locks, pins and many other grappling holds. A wrestling bout is a physical competition generally between two people, who attempt to gain and maintain a superior position over one another. Wrestling is one of the oldest martial arts with references to it as early as the Iliad that recounts the Trojan War in the 13th or 12th century BC. There are a wide range of styles with varying rules with both traditional historic and modern styles. In today's world wrestling techniques have been incorporated into other martial arts as well as many military hand to hand combat systems.

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR

Sweats, snorts and a T-shirt or whatever keeps you comfortable and cool. Wear well made wrestling shoes that can be purchased through most of the major sporting goods outlets. Keep in mind that no other types of athletic shoes are allowed on the mats or you can train barefoot if you choose. We also suggest that you bring a few towels, and a few bottles of water so you are completely prepared for your class.

Will I Get Self Defense Skills From My Class

Yes you will. However, you should keep in mind that wrestling techniques are not the stop all self-defense but they can help you in a tight spot.  Empire Training Center is not your local health club. At Empire Training we put great emphasis on self defense since we are a mixed martial arts facility.  Our wrestling students have an advantage because they have other more self-defense oriented classes available to them and can practice the techniques they learn with another student while training allowing them to visualize themselves in a real life fight situation.

How Can I Maximize My Workout

As with any other contact sport, if you want to improve your wrestling skills or trim an inch here and there, you'll have to train regularly. Two or three sessions a week is probably the minimum, In between classes you should go for brisk walks, do some yoga to increase your flexibility, or simply take a day to rest. Do whatever lets you return to your next wrestling class with renewed vigor. 

What should I expect from my Class

Be prepared to feel a little clumsy and lost at times, but don't get down on yourself for it. Even individuals who have been in the sport of wrestling for years don't grasp every new technique the first time. By the second or third class, the awkwardness will start to dissipate and you'll be keeping up with the class mastering new wrestling techniques as they are demonstrated by your instructor.

Can I Hurt Myself

Yes, if your not careful, you could end up with a wrenched elbow, a sprained knee, a strained back, a pulled hamstring, or one of the injuries that commonly occur in wrestling classes, such as a twisted ankle. So adopt a protective attitude, when you take your first class, tell yourself that your goal is to safely learn the techniques first before you set goals that are un-realistic. If you can spare the time arrive a few minutes early and warm up by jogging or gently stretching your legs and shoulders. During the class, make sure that you stop the motion of each move before the joint is fully extended to ensure you have a safe and productive workout.

How Long Are Classes

At Empire Training Center our group wrestling classes normally last for around one hour. However if you choose to take private instruction you and your instructor will discuss your goals and asses where you are physically and decide how long your training session should be to attain your specific goals. But in most cases even with private instruction your class will be around one hour, unless you are training for an upcoming amateur or professional MMA bout or some other type event that will require a great deal more stamina then is required by the average student.
